In a new Call for Papers, the UIA World Congress 2023 invites contributions that will shape the congress. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present at the congress taking place in Copenhagen, July 2-6, 2023.

The UIA World Congress 2023 CPH Science Track has opened a Call for Papers that invites contributions to the congress.
With the Call for Papers the UIA World Congress 2023 CPH aims to bring together knowledge across research, practice and education to provoke new perspectives, new alliances and concrete action. The call invites new research and knowledge that critically explore the diverse ways in which architecture and the built environment connect to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets.
“With only 8 years left to achieve the SDGs it is clear that real action must take place now. With this Call for Papers the World Congress aims to foster new research and knowledge exchanges needed for the architecture and the built environment disciplines to understand, build and fulfill their active role in achieving the SDGs. Together we have a collective responsibility to articulate and demonstrate architecture’s capacity to create impactful questions, approaches and solutions across all 17 SDGs and help ensure that no one is left behind,” says Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen, professor and General Reporter for UIA World Congress 2023 CPH Science Track.
Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present at the UIA World Congress 2023 in Copenhagen, July 2-6, 2023 and be published in a congress proceedings book-series published by Springer.
Deadline for Abstract submission is June 20, 2022.
Deadline for Full Paper submission is October 3, 2022.
The UIA 2023 Scientific Committee
The Scientific Committee is responsible for the scientific and professional content of the congress and critically drives and informs the work of the Science Track. Members of the committee are:

Major architecture event in Copenhagen
The UIA World Congresses are key events for professional exchange among all the world’s architects, taking place every three years since 1948, and bringing together thousands of participants from around the globe. Each of the UIA World Congresses focus on a specific architecture-related theme, developed by notable personalities from the international architectural, planning and construction fields.
The UIA World Congress invites architects and professionals from the building and planning communities to join the congress in Copenhagen in July 2023, which will be the first time a UIA World Congress is held in a Nordic country.
Architecture that contributes to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals
UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 CPH will focus on the 17 SDGs by sharing knowledge, discussing and showcasing architecture as a vital tool to achieve the goals.
Architecture and the built environments have extensive and complex impact on human and non-human wellbeing. To fulfill the SDG vision to ‘leave no one behind’, the UIA World Congress 2023 CPH asks how architecture can activate its agency in shaping societies and its potentials for a sustainable, equitable and inclusive future.
“We have reached the planetary boundaries, and we have a responsibility to radically change the way we design, construct, and grow the built environment, in order to reach humanely and environmentally sustainable societies. Nobody can solve the global sustainability challenges we face alone. But if we work together, build and share knowledge across national borders and across disciplines, we can contribute significantly to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. But we have to act now, and we have to ensure that we learn from those actions, share the new knowledge gained, and apply at scale,” says Natalie Mossin, President of Congress, UIA2023Cph, Region 1 Vice president, UIA, Head of Institute, the Royal Danish Academy – Institute of Architecture and Technology.
Copenhagen named UNESCO World Capital of Architecture for 2023
In parallel to the UIA World Congress, the city of Copenhagen has been officially designated as World Capital of Architecture in 2023 by UNESCO and UIA.
UNESCO and UIA launched the ‘World Capital of Architecture’ initiative to highlight the key role of architecture, city planning, and culture in shaping urban identity and sustainable urban development. Copenhagen is the second city to be named World Capital of Architecture – following Rio in 2021.
More than 6,000 participants from 135 countries attended the world’s largest event for sustainable architecture, the UIA World Congress of Architects in Copenhagen, this week. Prominent researchers and practitioners across borders and generations discussed how they can design to combat climate change, increase biodiversity and promote social inclusion. The congress concluded with the launch of 10 principles for rapid and radical change in the built environment – titled “The Copenhagen Lessons”.
The highly anticipated UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 will take place in Copenhagen from July 2nd to 6th. The congress will explore and highlight architecture’s potential to shape better societies and create a more sustainable built environment. The programme is filled with keynote dialogues, presentations and exhibitions in Bella Center – and guided tours, social events and experimental pavilions all around Copenhagen.
