Public architectural competitions – a tool to build a sustainable and inclusive future

The aim of this session is to highlight the innovative tendering model that the Sociedad Colombiana de Arquitectos (SCA) has been developing over the last 10 years. In 2022 it held 12 competitions and since 1938 it has held more than 1.000 competitions in architecture and urban planning. The SCA is an advisory body to the Colombian government, which means that the competitions lead to works or interventions that are carried out by the state and are a reference for the development of architecture in Colombia.

The new guidelines for these competitions include participatory work with the beneficiary communities, the obligation to incorporate the SDGs in the bases, evaluation and proposals; and expanding the calls for proposals, breaking down the barriers to participation in the community of architects, democratising access to competitions for both architects and the most vulnerable populations who gain access to high quality design tailored to their needs.

Competitions that generated spaces of resignification of icons of violence and/or exclusion and social stigmatisation, converted into spaces of inclusion, coexistence and social construction.
