Realdania Talks: Re-imagining coastal cities facing rising sea levels

What does a city that respects the forces of nature look like? Our historic cities and settlements along the coast may provide some answers. But as sea levels are rising at an unpredictable scale and pace – and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future – coastal cities are faced with the urgent task of developing entirely new answers and design principles in order to meet and manage the silent, but impending threat of flooding.

During this session, we will explore the necessity to incorporate nature-based solutions in future, adaptive urban development. And we unfold the emerging paradigm of nature-based coastal protection that challenges the concept of a clear-cut coastal ‘line’ dividing water and land – perhaps even re-negotiating our basic understanding of the relationship between cities, nature and human beings.
