Sociologist Kathy Charmaz argues that individuals with illness and disability’s stories and sufferings are often silenced, trivialized, and discounted and she asks: “Who has legitimacy to choose to be silent or to break silences, and who are forced to remain silent” (979). Olivia Dahl researches and studies in the field of critical disability studies, social interaction and everyday life. She uses qualitative methods to gain information about the lives, perspectives, “silences”, words and opinions of disabled individuals/individuals with functional variations and/or disability. She has a special focus on localizing the barriers and potentials individuals experience when it comes to flourishing and everyday living with disability in today’s society.
