Councillor HY William Chan is an architect, civic champion and cities expert known for ‘designing for dignity’. He is the youngest-ever independent politician elected to public office and serves on the Sydney Lord Mayoral governing team. From urban planning, transport, heritage, environment and sustainability to culture, creativity and inclusion, William chairs the development of Australia’s global city.
Hailed a “game-changing leader” by Forbes, William’s innovation at the intersection of citymaking and policymaking is described as a disruptive force in the built environment over the next 50 years. Not only is he shaping the cities of the future, but how we can all be part of the process.
His fellowship appointments have included the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Columbia University’s Climate School, and the World Economic Forum with Apolitical Foundation and University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government.
William’s design leadership has been showcased on the world stage from TED and the United Nations General Assembly to the Venice Biennale. He became the first architect internationally to feature in the Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ and GreenBiz ‘Top 30 Young Global Sustainability Leaders’ by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
